Gràcia – sight: Casa Vicens

Casa Vicens er Gaudís første hus i Barcelona, og vi er derfor tilbage ved Gaudís begyndelse. Han er da også kun 31 år i 1883, da han får opgaven med at opføre et sommerhus for vennen og børshandleren, Manel Vicens y Montaner, i Gràcia som dengang lå udenfor Barcelona.

Huset er et rigtig godt sted at se Gaudís arkitektoniske udgangspunkt. Som der står på hjemmesiden, ser man her “Gaudí før Gaudí”, altså på det tidspunkt hvor han udfolder sit gení, men ikke helt har fundet sin essens eller udtryksform endnu. Når du ser hans senere bygninger, som f.eks. Casa Batlló, La Pedrera eller La Sagrada Familia, hvor han netop er blevet til “Gaudí”, ja så kan du se udviklingen i hans arkitektoniske stil.

I starten virker det på mig, som om han “sætter” naturen udenpå materialerne, i de senere bygninger er det som om naturens organiske former er integreret i og opstår ud af byggematerialerne. Selvom Gaudí i hans sidste værker er mere tydelig, enkelt og organisk i sit udtryk, kan man nemt se hans geniale kreative talenter udfolde sig i Casa Vicens. Her finder man det catalansk håndværk blandet med elementer inspireret af det japanske, arabiske og engelske – og så selvfølgelig naturen, som altid er udgangspunktet for Gaudís inspiration.

Bygningen skiller sig klar ud fra de andre bygninger i kvarteret og virker på mig nærmest lidt som et Villa Villekulla-hus i det hyggelige Gràcia-kvarter. Særlig karakteristik er naturligvis de forskellige kakler, de flotte farver og elementerne af smedejern.

Huset overtages senere af den rige Jover-familie, og bliver fra 1899 denne families permanente residens. I 1925 udvides huset betydeligt af arkitekten Joan Baptista Serra de Martínez, dog under Gaudís supervision. Der var egentlig en stor, smuk have tilknyttet huset, men den er med tiden desværre forsvundet. Huset blev dog opført på UNESCOs liste i 2005.

Senest er huset i 2014 blevet af banken MoraBanc, hvorefter det har gennemgået en grundig restauration, hvor huset er blevet først tilbage til Gaudís originale elementer. I 2017 åbner huset for publikum som et museum.

Det er da også et rigtig fint, mindre museum med en dejlig have og en god atmosfære. Og ja, så er det heller ikke så overrendt – endnu – af turister som de mere berømte bygninger af Gaudí. Måske fordi de ikke helt har fundet denne lille perle endnu? Det er sikkert kun et spørgsmål om tid, så skynd dig!

Casa Vicens is Gaudi’s first house in Barcelona, and here we find ourselfes at the beginning of Gaudí’s career. He is only 31 years old in 1883, when he is given the task of constructing a summer house for his the friend and stock broker Manel Vicens y Montaner, in Gràcia, which was then outside Barcelona.

The house is a great place to see Gaudi’s architectural starting point. As it says on the website, you will see “Gaudí before Gaudí”, that is at the time he unfolds his genius, but hasn’t completely found his essence or expression yet. When you see his later buildings, such as Casa Batlló, La Pedrera or La Sagrada Familia, where he had become “Gaudí”, you can see the development of his architectural style.

At first, it seems to me as if he “puts” nature on the outside of the materials, in his later buildings it is as if the natural forms are integrated into and arise from the building materials. Although Gaudí in his latter works is more clear, simple and organic in his expression, one can easily see his ingenious creative talents unfold in Casa Vicens. Here you will find Catalan craft mixed with elements inspired by Japanese, Arabic and English culture – and of course nature, which is always basis for Gaudi’s inspiration.

The building stands out from the other buildings in the neighborhood and seems to me almost like a Villa Villekulla house in the cozy Gràcia neighborhood. Special characteristics are ,of course, the different tiles, the beautiful colors and the iron elements.

The house is later occupied by the wealthy Jover family, and becomes from 1899 their permanent residence. In 1925, the house was significantly expanded by architect Joan Baptista Serra de Martínez, under Gaudí’s supervision. There was really a big beautiful garden attached to the house, but unfortunately it has disappeared over time. However, the house was listed on the UNESCO list in 2005.

Most recently, the house was bought by the bank MoraBanc in 2014, after which it has undergone a thorough restoration leading the house back to Gaudi’s original elements. In 2017 the house opened to the public as a museum.

It is also a really beautiful a nice museum with a lovely garden and a cozy atmosphere. Also it isn’t as crowded by tourists as the more famous buildings of Gaudi. Maybe because they have not quite found this little gem yet? It’s probably only a matter of time, so hurry up!
