Corpus Kristus er en katolsk festdag, som falder ca. 60 dage efter påske. Jeg må indrømme, at jeg har lidt svært ved at forstå præcis, hvad Corpus Kristus egentlig handler om, der skal man vist være lidt bedre inde i kristen/katolsk mysticisme. Men så vidt jeg har forstået, handler dagen om at fejre Kristi legeme og blod, altså Nadveren.
Corpus Kristi fejres naturligvis også rundt omkring i Catalonien som i det øvrige Spanien. Den fejres forskellige vis, f.eks. med religiøse processioner, ofte krydret med lokale traditioner.
L’ou com balla
I Catalonien markeres Corpus Christi f.eks. med L’ou com balla – det dansende æg, hvor et æg “danser” oven på vandet i en fontæne, som i dagens anledning er overdådigt pyntet med blomster. For at ægget kan “danse”, må det i forvejen tømmes og fyldes igen med et materiale, der giver det vægt nok til at kunne balancere og “danse” ovenpå fontænes vandstråle.
Man mener, at traditionen er startet i Barcelonas katedral i det 16. århundrede, og derfra har den spredt sig til andre steder i Barcelona og Catalonien. Hvorfor traditionen er startet, ved historikerne ikke rigtig, ligesom man heller ikke ved, om traditionen med det dansende æg er religiøs eller mere folkloristisk. Nogle mener, at ægget med vandet er symbolet på Kristi blod og legeme, andre mener at ægget symboliserer det nye liv, som foråret bringer.
Men måske er det også liget meget, det er en smuk og forunderlig tradition – at se ægget “danse” på fontænens vandstråle midt i blomsterhavet og vide, at det har det gjort siden Middelalderen!
“Alfombras florales” – Sitges
En anden tradition, som jeg tvivler på er lige så gammel, er Sitges‘ tradition med at lave “tæpper” af blomsterblade (alfombras florales) midt i gaderne til Corpus Kristi. Her samles børn og voksne i gaden, og ud fra et optegnet mønster lægges blomsterblade ud i fællesskab. Et smuk syn og skønt at se børnene deltage på lige fod med de voksne. Desværre druknede blomstertæpperne i år i den regn, som kom senere på dagen. Men om morgenen kunne man følge blomstertæpperne blive lavet over hele byen, og smukt var det så længe, det varede.
Jeg er nok ikke den helt rigtige til at fejre Kristi legeme og blod, men blomster, æg og forår i en mystisk og smuk blanding, den er jeg da helt med på!

Corpus Christi is a Catholic holiday celebrated approx. 60 days after Easter. I have to admit that I’m finding it dificult to understand exactly what Corpus Christi is, as I’m not that well off in Christian / Catholic mysticism. But as far as I understand it, the day is about celebrating the body and blood of Christ, that is, the sacrament.
Of course, Corpus Christi is celebrated throughout Catalonia as in the rest of Spain. It’s celebrated in different ways, mostly with religious processions blended with local traditions.
L’ou com balla
In Catalonia, Corpus Christi is celebrated with L’ou com Balla – the dancing egg. Here you will see an egg “dancing” on the water of a fountain, which is lavishly decorated with flowers for the ocasion. In order for the egg to “dance”, it must be emptied and stuffed with a material that gives it enough weight to balance and “dance” on top of fountain’s water.
It is believed that the tradition began in Barcelona’s cathedral in the 16th-century, and from there it has spread to other places in Barcelona and Catalonia. Why the tradition has started, or if the tradition is religious or more folkloristic, the historians can not say. Some believe that the egg with the water is the symbol of Christ’s blood and body, others believe that the egg symbolizes the new life of spring.
But maybe it’s doesn’t matter much, it’s a beautiful and marvelous tradition – watching the egg “dance” on the fountain of water in the midst of the flowers – and knowing that it’s been like that since the Middle Ages!
“Alfombras florales” – Sitges
Another tradition is Sitges’ tradition of making “blankets” of flowers (alfombras florales) in the middle of the streets for Corpus Christi. Here, children and adults gather together in the street, and based on a pattern, flower petals are laid out. A beautiful sight and nice to see the children enjoying the activity together with the adults. Unfortunately, this year the flower carpets drowned in the rain that came later that day. But in the morning you could follow the flower carpets being made all over the city.
I’m probably not the one to celebrate Christ’s body and blood, but flowers, eggs and spring in a mysterious and beautiful blend, I can totally celebrate that!
