L’Eixample – sight: La Sagrada Familia

Et must-see for alle, der besøger Barcelona for første gang, er La Sagrada Familia. Hvorhenne i verden ser man en kirke af det format blive bygget rent bogstaveligt?! Det er et gigantisk projekt, Gaudís mesterværk, som hverken pengeproblemer, Gaudís død, borgerkrig eller kritiske røster har kunne stoppet – i hvert fald kun periodevist, siden byggeriet startede i 1882. Kirken blev paveindviet i 2010 og skal stå helt færdig i 2026 på 100 årsdagen for Gaudís død.

Selv har jeg fulgt kirken siden midt 90’erne, hvor der ikke stod ret meget mere end de to facader og nogle tårne. Selv den gang var den fascinerede, smuk og meget anderledes end så meget andet kirkebyggeri. Det er tydeligt at se, at det er den dybttroende Gaudís hyldest til Guds storhed.

Kritiske røster vil stille spørgsmålstegn ved, om hvor meget Gaudí der er i kirken i dag. Siden starten er byggemetoderne blevet moderne (dét og de penge, som den store turiststrøm lægger hver dag, er bl.a. derfor, at byggeriet i dag går så hurtigt frem), materialerne ligeså, og Gaudí selv efterlod ikke mange tegninger og skitser ved sin død. Men de mange kunstnere og arkitekter, som er tilknyttet kirkebyggeriet, fortolker alt i Gaudís ånd, så den afspejler både Gaudís store inspiration fra naturen, samtidig med at den er forankret i catalansk modernistisk arkitektur. Det er måske også derfor, at byggeriet også har en moderne og tidsløs ånd over sig.

Gennem årerne har jeg set byggeriet skride frem i en sjov blanding af museum og byggeplads på samme tid, flere og flere elementer er kommet til, så indtrykket hver gang har været lidt forskelligt. Det var især et stort øjeblik for nogle år siden at træde ind i kirkerummet og se, at det nu var blevet en fungerende kirke. Sætte sig på bænken og se op i det smukke, smukke loft og rundt i kirkerummet. Fantastisk!

Smag og behag er forskellig, men jeg synes, kirken er fantastisk både indvendig og udvendig. Arkitekturen er unik, lyset indenfor i kirken fantastisk, og overalt er der forunderlige deltaljer. På en eller anden måde bliver jeg aldrig helt færdig med La Sagrada Familia, det er virkeligt et mageløst byggeri at være vidne til igennem årerne.

Er du i Barcelona for første gang, eller er det mange år siden, at du har været forbi, ja så anbefaler jeg stærkt, at du kigger forbi. Vil du ind i kirken, skal du købe/bestille billet til et specifik tidspunkt, gør det evt. online eller kom på de skæve tidspunkter. Du kommer ikke uden om en stor mængde turister, men kig ind alligevel og tag dig tid til at nyde kirkerummet og alle detaljerne – og ja, følge byggeriet. A must-see for anyone visiting Barcelona for the first time is La Sagrada Familia. Where in the world are you able to see a church like this literally being built?! The construction is a giant project, Gaudi’s masterpiece, which neither money problems, Gaudí’s death, civil war or critical voices have been able to stop – at least only periodically since its construction began in 1882. The church was inaugurated by the pope in 2010 and will be fully completed in 2026 to honor the 100th anniversary of Gaudí’s death.

I have been following the construction of the church since the mid 90’s, where there was not much more than the two facades and some towers. Even at that time it was impressive, beautiful and very different than other church buildings. It is clear to see that it is the deeply religious Gaudi’s tribute to the greatness and creation of God.

Critical voices will question how much of Gaudí there actually is in the church today. Since the beginning, construction methods have become modern (this and the amount of money generated by the contant stream of tourists is the reason why the construction today goes rather quickly), the materials as well, and Gaudí himself did not leave that many drawings and sketches at his death. But the many artists and architects connected to the building of the church interpret everything in the spirit of Gaudí, reflecting his great inspiration from nature as well as it is anchored in Catalan modernist architecture. This may be the reason why the church also has a modern and timeless feeling.

Over the years, I have seen the construction progressing, a fun mix of museum and building site at the same time. More and more elements have been added making a different impression with every visit. It was especially moving entering the church a few years ago and see that it had become a functioning church. Just sitting on a bench and look up in the beautiful, beautiful ceiling and around the room. Breath-taking!

Of course, taste is personal, but I think that the church is fantastic – inside and outside. The architecture is unique, the lights inside the church are amazing, and everywhere there are marvelous details. In one way or another, I’m never completely finished with La Sagrada Familia, and it feels truly fantastic to have been able to follow the construction throughout the years.

If you are in Barcelona for the first time, or you haven’t seen the church for a long time,  I strongly recommend that you visit the sight. If you want to enter the church, you have to buy / book the ticket at a specific time, if possible online or try to buy a ticket in the odd hours. You can not escape the large amount of tourists there, but nevermind them, just take your time and enjoy the church with all its details – and yes, see the construction of it.
