Well, I promised here to come up with some of Madrid’s “usual suspects”, so I´ve better make my promise. I might not be a “real” blogger recommending you a tourist spot rather than a small trendy place. But does it matter? The turist spots are often growed for a reason. Anyway, the 3 places in Madrid that I´m recommending here and in the following posts, are places that I loved to visit when I was living in Madrid back in time. So I think I have a valid reason to go a little mainstream …

And I start with a recommendation to go for a walk in the Parque del Retiro, just to enjoy the park and the life there. Here in, what is called the green lungs of Madrid, you can take a break from the vibrant life of the big city and enjoy the beautiful park either in the company of the many Madrileños there or (almost) by yourself. It is possible to find places in the park where you can be reasonably alone, especially if you go there in a regular day. If you come on Sundays, the park will be filled with dates, cyclists, families taking a walk, picnics, musicians, etc.

The Retiro Park is a former royal park and covers over 125 hectares of land. The center is an artificial lake – Estanque del Buen Retiro, where it is possible to row and where much of park life is taking place on the two sides, especially on the side with the Alfonso VII monument (see the above videos). Another fix point is the Palacio de Cristal, formerly a large greenhouse for exotic plants, that now houses various exhibitions.

Otherwise, just walk around the park and enjoy the various sculptures, different styled gardens, fountains, etc., besides all the people who happens to be in the park that day.

The park was one of my absolute favorite places when I lived in Madrid in the 90’s. I have spent countless hours resting here after the nightlife that Madrid is so famous for, along with my girlfriends. The park is the city’s breathing space, a pause button, and definitely worth both a revisit and a visit!
