Last beach day of the summer?

Den 11. September (Diada Nacional de Catalunya) er en vigtig katalansk helligdag, der markerer enden på den katalanske selvstændighed som følge af Barcelonas fald i forbindelse med Arvefølgekrigen i 1714. Dagen er af stor vigtighed for den katalanske selvfølelse/identitet og bliver ofte brugt til politiske demonstrationer. Således var der samlet over 600.000 mennesker ved Plaza de Cataluña for at ytre ønsker om politiske reformer og selvstændighed.

Jeg holdt mig dog langt væk fra det politiske og tilbragte dagen sammen med mine roommates på stranden i Costa Brava. Vi drog tidligt at sted for at nyde sommerens måske sidste dag til strandtur, og denne gang valgte vi at køre til  området omkring Blanes og Lloret de Mar ca. 60 km. nord fra Barcelona.

Vi tilbragte det meste af dagen på Playa de Santa Christina, hvortil du kommer igennem den smukke Cala Treumal. Smuk sandstrand, ikke overbefolket eller overturistet og dejligt klart badevand, som du kan se i nedenstående video. Bagved selve stranden er det kuperet og grønt, og mod syd og nord kan du se klipper og andre strande/calaer langs den imponerende kyst – du kan bl.a skimte et af tårnene fra borgen ved Tossa del Mar. Har du lyst til en sejltur er der også flere både/små færger, der anløber direkte ved stranden.

Sidst på eftermiddagen tog vi et smut til en anden strand, nemlig nedenstående Playa de sa Boadella, som ligger tættere på Lloret de Mar. En mindre strand med grovere sand, men hyggelig og smuk – og med et park beliggende bagved. Har man lyst til at tage hjem? Næ, men sulten drog os til Lloret del Mar til en lille restaurant: “Galicia Mar” nede ved strandpromenaden, hvor vi fik den lækreste fisk og skaldyr – den perfekte afslutning på sommerens måske sidste stranddag, desværre.

The 11th of September (Diada Nacional de Catalunya) is an important Catalan holiday that marks the end of Catalan independence after the fall of Barcelona during the War of Succession in 1714. The day is of great importance to Catalan identity and is therefore often used for political demonstrations. This year, more than 600,000 people were gathered at the Plaza de Cataluña demonstrating for political reforms and the independence of Cataluña.

However, I kept far away from political issues and spent the day with my roommates at the beach in Costa Brava. We went early to enjoy perhaps the last day of summer for a trip to the beach, and this time we went to the area around the towns of Blanes and Lloret de Mar located approx. 60 km. north from Barcelona.

Most of the day was spent at Playa de Santa Christina, a beach you enter through the beautiful Cala Treumal. It´s a beautiful beach, not totally crowded and with beautiful clear water, as you can see in the video above. Behind the beach, the landscape is hilly and green, and to both the south and north you can see cliffs and other beaches /calas along the impressive coastline – for example you can see a tower from the castle at Tossa del Mar. If you like to take a boat trip, there are also several boats/small ferries arriving directly at the beach.

In the late afternoon we went to another beach, the Playa de sa Boadella, located closer to Lloret de Mar. As seen in the video above, it´s a smaller beach with coarser sand, but nice and beautiful – and with a park located behind it. How can you leave that setting? Well, finally we got hungry and went therefore to Lloret del Mar to dine at a small restaurant: “Galicia Mar” down by the seafront. Enjoying the most delicious seafood, a prefekt day at the beach came to an end. And this was probably the last beach day this summer, unfortunately.
