Beautiful Mallorca

Jeg har været på charterferie, all inclusive og det hele, og det på Mallorca, som vel nok kan betragtes som ét af masseturismens fødesteder. Det er egentlig ikke min måde at rejse på. Slet ikke i Spanien, hvor jeg altid forsøger at gå udenom og blende ind, så godt jeg kan, med lokalbefolkningen. Men min mor ønskede at fejre sin 70 års fødselsdag med en rejse med hele familie, så vi var 11 mand af sted: mine forældre, mine to søskende med ægtefæller og to børn hver – og så moster/faster her.

Masseturisme i fuld flor

Jeg fik ellers mine bange anelser bekræftet i busturen fra lufthavnen til hotellet i strandområdet omkring Alcudia. Masseturisme i fuld flor: restauranter af tvivlsom karakter, souvenirbutikker i bunkevis, udlejning biler, cykler m.m. – og med en retro-feel på den ikke helt fede måde… Og hotellet var en oase i sig selv, supersmukt men crowed, masser af børn overalt, lækker strand, personale med overskud og gode mojitos. Man behøvede streng taget ikke gå uden for hotellets område, hvilket jeg også mistænker mange af gæsterne for ikke at gøre.

Find perlerne

Jeg – med og uden resten af familien – tog dog nogle afstikkere væk fra hotellet, og det synes jeg, at man bør. Det kan være svært helt at undgå turisterne, men det er muligt at finde smukke steder, hvor turismen får lov til at udfolde sig på en fin og ikke vulgær måde. I mine efterfølgende posts vil jeg komme ind på nogle perler, som jeg besøgte:

Mallorca er smuk, romantisk og giver lyst til mere. Men du skal væk fra den endeløse strøm af badegæster, som kun er interesseret i at dase ved poolen og gå amok i buffeten. Gå i stedet på opdagelse i bjergene Serra Tramuntana og langs kysten, hvor du kan finde små lækre strande langs de mange kløfter omkring øen. Nyd havet, solen, naturen, maden, de små landsbyer og lækre Palma. Mallorca inviterer til opdagelse, og Mallorca fortjener det!

I have been on a charter holiday, all inclusive and everything, and that in Mallorca, which can probably be considered as one of the birth places of mass tourism. It’s not really my way of travelling, and not at all in Spain where I always try to blend in the best I can with the locals. But my mother wanted to celebrate her 70th birthday with a family trip so there we went, 11 in total: my parents, my two siblings with spouses and two children each – and me the auntie.

Masstourism in full bloom

My worse expectations was confirmed on the bus ride from the airport to the hotel in the beach area around Alcudia. Mass tourism in full bloom: dubious restaurants, souvenir shops in bundles, rental cars, bicycles, etc., all with an unattractive retro feeling … The hotel was an oasis in itself, beautiful but crowed, lots of kids everywhere, nice beach, inviting staff and good mojitos. In fact, you didn´t have to go outside the hotel area at all, which I suspect many of the guests didn´t do.

Find the beauty

I – with and without the rest of the family – did step outside the hotel on excursions, which I highly recommend. It can be difficult to completely avoid tourists, but it is possible to find beautiful places where tourism is unfolded in a nice and non vulgar way. Mallorca is beautiful, romantic and make you want more. But you have to step away from the endless stream of turists only interested in sunbathing by the pool or going crazy at the buffet. Take time to explore the Serra Tramuntana mountains and drive along the coast where you can find small, beautiful beaches along the many gorges around the island . Enjoy the sea, the sun, the nature, the food, the villages and beautiful Palma. Mallorca invites you to go on discovery and Mallorca deserves it!
